The ONLY vintage shop in Tenerife – Mikimono in Santa Cruz

Mikimono used to be in the university town of La Laguna, but fortune brought her to the capital, and me.

I find Paloma, the colourfully coordinated owner sorting out stock in her warehouse next door to her boutique. She is too bashful to pose, although she does open up shop and welcomes me wholeheartedly into her beautiful world even though she is closed for lunch.

We share a passion for vintage lingerie, but in Tenerife it doesn’t sell so she concentrates on customised vintage Levi’s and bright 70s and 80s shirt dresses, which she shortens mid-thigh. In Tenerife you definitely show your legs!

When I ask her who her customer is she says, ‘the lolitas’ - the local girls that parade through the city centre on a Sunday. Although there is a lot more interest in vintage, there is definitely quite a long way to go, and Paloma has had to incorporate some hand-picked designer shoes, sadly the secondhand variety is a no no!

I leave, with Paloma promising to show me her vintage lingerie collection under a less gruelling time scale. LFW is calling and I need to catch a plane!

Mikimono war einst in der Universitaet Stadt von La Laguna, aber Glück führte sie zu der Hautpstadt, und zu mir!

Ich sehe Paloma ,die bunt Koordinierte Inhaberin, die ihr Lager, neben ihrem Boutique, aufräumte. Sie ist zu schüchtern, um Fotografiert zu werden, aber sie macht ihr Laden auf und ladet mich herzlich in ihre wunderbare Welt ein - dabei macht sie eigentlich Mittagspause.

Wir haben beide eine Leidenschaft fuer vintage Dessous, aber in Tenerife kann man es nicht loswerden. Sie konzentriert sich stattdessen auf vintage Levi’s und grelle Hemdkleider aus den 70 und 80iger Jahren, die sie auf Oberschenkel höhe verkürzt. In Tenerife kann man auf jeden Fall die Beine zeigen!

Ich fragte sie wer ihre Kunden sind: ‘die Lolitas’ sagte sie – die Mädels aus der Gegend, die an Sonntagen durch die Stadt laufen. Obwohl vintage schon Interesse erweckt, ist es lange nicht genug, und Paloma verkauft deshalb selbst-ausgewaehlte designer Schuhe – second-hand geht unglücklicherweise einfach nicht.

Ich verabschiede mich von Paloma mit dem Versprechen, sie wird mir, wenn wir mehr Zeit haben, ihre vintage Dessous Kollektion zeigen. London Fashion Week ruft – und ich muss den Flug erreichen!

It’s a New Age – Tenerife’s Morena Mia’s SS13 Collection

I managed to catch up with the gorgeous Jacqui Cuesta (below), owner of the brand Morena Mia, returning from The SIMM showrooms in Madrid having showcased with 7 other Tenerife Moda designers for spring/summer 2013.

I discovered her SS12 collection (my favourite is the above monochrome maxi) just recently. The dress is far too moreish just to wear HOLIDAY-SIDE. So, I am creatively rethinking its autumnal transformation into a ‘wear to LFW piece’! Wait to see!

Me: Jacqui what was the inspiration behind your SS13 collection?
JC: Because of the country’s crisis, I called the collection “New Age”. I wanted
something NEW and FRESH, together with the desire to renovate the brand both internally and externally.

Me: How was the show? Everyone has been talking about the CRISIS and it being reflected in the lack of inspiration in the collections. What do you think? Was it noticeable?
JC: Actually it was good for us. We reached all of our sales targets. Although the best was seeing the buyers liking the collection. This season I have really tried to keep our prices competitive and accessible and it has worked. Also the show turnout was much higher than I expected, taking the situation into account.

Me: You have three brands under the label. What are your profiles for each one?
JC: You’re right. Our collection is divided into three sub-collections, although the three coincide in that they cater for today’s active and sophisticated woman, combining comfortable and natural fibres with a great cut.
Our three brands are:
- Morena Mia by Q – Casual, Fresh & Young
- Morena Mia by Q – Cocktail, Party & Special Events.
- Morena Mia “Angels Never Die” – Urban European – design led and ideal for all occasions.

Me: Where is your workshop?
JC: We have two offices. One in Tenerife and another in Almeria . We manufacture in Spain, Europe and Asia

Me: If you could just take one item on the motorbike what piece would it be?
JC: Anything from the Sugar Baby collection for Morena Mia by Q. It’s ideal for daily riding in the city!

Well, I am thinking, although I didn’t want to point it out that bluntly, but Jacqui would find it seriously hard travelling with my mini pannier for storage – especially choosing just one piece from her fab collection!

Currently her SS13 collection will be stocked in Tenerife at Jade, Anthea, Jacqueline, Moda, Arena, Rompeolas and Tentacion.

Ich habe es geschafft mich mit der wunderschönen Jacqui Cuesta zu verabreden. Sie hatte ihre eigene Marke, Morena Mia, bei den SIMM showrooms, mit 7 anderen Tenerife Moda Designers ausgestellt, die ebenso ihre Spring/Summer Kollektion 2013 gezeigt haben.

Ich habe erst kürzlich ihre SS12 endeckt (mein Favorit ist die Monochrome Maxi ). Das Kleid kann ich aber auf keinen Fall nicht nur im URLAUB anziehen! Also denke ich nach, wie ich es mit herbstlicher kreativitaet zu einem Wear to LFW Outfit umwandeln kann! Abwarten!

Ich: Jacqui, was war deine Inspiration fuer die SS13 Kollektion?

JC: Wegen der Krise im Lande, habe ich die Kollektion “New Age” genannt. Ich wollte etwas NEUES und LEBHAFTES, zusammen mit dem Wunsch die Marke innnen und aussen zu erneuern.

Ich: Wie war die Show? Alle reden über die KRISE und wie sie einen negative Einfluss auf die Kollektion hat. Was denkst du? War es auffällig?

JC: Für uns war es gut. Wir haben alle Ziel Umsätze erreicht. Aber das Beste war, den Käufern defiel die Kollektion. Unsere Preise waren diese Saison konkurenzbetont und zugänglich – und dies war erfolgreich. Zusätzlich war auf der Show viel los, viel mehr als ich gedacht hätte, vorallem wenn man die Situation in betracht nimmt.

Ich: Du hast drei Marken in einem Label. Was sind ihre jeweiligen Profile?

JC: Ja, du hast Recht. Unsere Kollektion ist in drei Sub-Kollektionen aufgeteilt, obwohl sich alle drei ueberschneiden: sie sind fuer die heutige, aktive, und anspruchsvolle Frau geeignet, mit einer Kombination von Bequemlichkeit, natürlichen Fasern und tollem Schnitt.

- Morena Mia by Q – Cocktail, Party & Special Events

- Morena Mia “Angels Never Die” – Urban European – designorientiert und für alle Anlaesse geeignet.

Ich: Wo befindet sich dein Atelier?

JC: Wir haben zwei Büros. Eine in Tenerife und eine in Almeria. Angertigung wird in Spanien, Europa und Asien gemacht.

Ich: Wenn du nur ein Stück auf dem Motorrad mitnehmen durftest, was würde es sein?

JC: Etwas von der Sugar Baby Kollektion für Morena Mia by Q. Es ist perfekt für die tägliche Fahrt durch die Stadt!

Ich wollte nicht allzu direkt sein, also habe ich es nicht ausgesprochen, aber ich dachte Jacqui würde es ziemlich schwer fallen mit meiner mini-Doppelpacktasche zu reisen – vorallem nur ein Stück ihrer superschönen Kollektion auszusuchen!

Ihre SS13 wird bei Jade, Anthea, Jacqueline, Moda, Arena, Rompeolas und Tentacion verfügbar sein.

Varsity layering and multiprint, ELECTRONICA at Canarias VIVA and the last of Summer Jam 2012

Well it all really started for me after seeing Ashish’s AW12/13 ‘ Bollywouldnt’ collection of which Vogue’s Tilly Macalister-Smith said ‘…a knitted sweater thrown over a glitzy gown or sequinned trouser. It was Brixton meets Bombay,”

Then came fashion trend forecaster Trendstop’s ‘Multiprint Blingista’, a mish mash of busy colour worn easy…and a tripping of the tongue!

Finally a crazy coloured, limited edition 3-piece capsule collection for the 25th anniversary of Where’s Wally by British manufactured ZATCHELS, really catapulted me to realisation…

ELECTRONICA! And what better way to sign off summer pre-LFW than to hit
SUMMER JAM TENERIFE ?- a pure fest of the best electronic sounds.

Of course there is reason in this madness. I will be wearing ASHISH and THTC, and carrying my Zap-It in my Zatchel at the VIP bar whilst waiting for Steve Aoki and Real el Canario to go LIVE! Join me?

Also, es fing damit an, nachdem ich die ‘ Bollywouldnt’ Kollektion von Ashish’s AW12/13 gesehen habe. So Macalister-Smith “…ein gestrickter Pulli über ein glitzerndes Abendkleid oder eine paillettenbesetze Hose”. Es war Brixton meets Bombay”

Dann kam der Trend-Forecaster Trendstop mit ‘Multiprint Blingista’ ein Mischmasch von leicht zu tragenden Farben …und das fast Unausprechliche!

Zum Ende kam eine verrückt kolorierte, limited edition, drei teilige Capsule Collection für den 25igsten Jahrestag von der Kinderbücher ‘Where’s Wally” von der Britisch-hergestellten, ZATCHELS – das hat mich völlig in die Realität gebracht….

ELECTRONICA! Und was ist besser als den Sommer, vor LFW, mit SUMMER JAM TENERIFE zu beenden? ein Fest von Electronic Sounds.

Natürlich gibt es Grund für das Verrückte: Ich werde ASHISH und THTC anziehen, mein Zap-It in meiner Zatchel Tasche tragen und in der VIP Bar auf Steve Aoki und Real el Canario warten! Macht ihr mit?

Get there quick before it’s discovered!

It’s 8.00pm and I am swimming in my own pool. It’s warm and I can see the sunset. The Maldives…? No. It’s Hotel Suite Villas María, Costa Adeje, Tenerife. Yep, unbelievable! There’s not one child or alcohol-fuelled reveler in sight, just two delicious pools with water warmed by the sun all to myself…until discovery.

Out of the 70 or so one, two or three bedroom villas, there are options for renting with Jacuzzi or plunge pool. You’ll want to get your OWN pool for sure!

Buggies are the novelty and bellboys ferry you smilingly to and from your accommodation or anywhere in the complex, and although the Golf Costa Adeje courses are fairly near, there really are none of those GOLFY types about!

Facilities are more than adequate. There is a gym, squash/tennis courts, putting and a spa on the way, but truthfully, a brisk jog down to the seafront at La Caleta before the sun kicks in certainly ups the heartbeats!

Mr. P reigned in due to Chef David Moraga - the latest bright star on the Nouvelle Canarian cuisine circuit, for being on holiday, but from La Torre restaurant, he declared the scrambled eggs breakfast cooked to perfection!

Of course you know this little hidden gem might not last forever! Visiting before the cleaners stop smiling is definitely A PLAN.

Los, bevor es entdeckt wird!

Es ist 20.00 Uhr und ich schwimme in meinem privaten Pool. Es ist warm und ich sehe den Sonnenuntergang. Die Malediven…? Nein, es ist Hotel Suite Villas María, Costa Adeje, Tenerife. Ja, unglaublich! Nicht ein einziges Kind oder berauschter Feiernder, bloss zwei herrliche Pools mit sonnengewärmtes Wasser, für mich alleine…bis es entdeckt wird.

Von den c.a 70 Villas mit ein, zwei oder drei Schlafzimmern, hat man die Auswahlmöglichkeit die Villa mit Jacuzzi oder Plunge Pool zu mieten. Ich empfehle, mit privatem Pool auf jeden Fall!

Buggys sind hier aufregende Neuheiten und die Hotelboys fahren einem lächelnd von der Unterkunft bis wo immer man hin möchte. Und obwohl die Golf Costa Adeje in der nähe ist, gibt es keine von diesen GOLFER TYPEN zu sehen!

Die Unterkunft ist mehr als ausreichend. Es gibt ein Fitnessstudio, Squash und Tennis Plätze, Putten und ein noch nicht eröffnetes Wellness Center. Aber um ehrlich zu sein, ein kurzes joggen zum Uferpromenade in La Caleta bevor die Sonne erscheint tut den Kreislauf schon gut!

Mr. P hielt sich im Zaum weil, David Moraga – der neuester, hochverehrter Koch der kanarischen Küchenszene – im Urlaub war, aber bezeichnete den Rührei, vom La Torre Restaurant, perfekt!

Man ahnt schon, dieses Prachtstück wird nicht lange versteckt bleiben! Am besten kommt man bevor die Reinigungskräfte aufhören zu lächeln.

Mefaldas Tú and the story of the three sisters

Take one very talented Pasarela Gaudí designer that has been baby-ed out; her sister, a marketing and media kid and the third, a fine art painter. What do you have? A talented combination that cannot be stopped!

The birth of Mefaldas Tú has been a while in coming (waiting on babies and all), but so much creative hub bub is bound to create big fireworks.

I was privileged to be previewing the first collection at it’s soft launch this week! Now, I am certainly in no way a skirt person, but there is something about Ana Juarez‘s cut, trims and textiles that just kind of works! The skirts are exclusive – just 10 of each design, and at a very, very reasonable 65 euros, I wore one out of the workshop and into the jaws of my gang who ripped it from my hands for a try on! You see…

THERE IS JUST NO more furiouser a PASSION THAN THAT OF FASHION…oh deary me!

Man nehme eine sehr talentierte Pasarela Gaudí Designerin, die ausgebaby-d wurde; ihre Schwester, ein marketing und media Kind, und die dritte, eine Künstlerin der Schönen Kunst. Das Ergebnis? Eine talentierte Kombination, die nicht aufzuhalten ist!

Auf die Geburt von Mefaldas Tú wartet man schon ewig lange (Babies und all das hielten auf), aber so viel Kreativität erzeugt höchstwahrscheinlich riesen Feuerwerke!

Ich hatte, beim stillen Projektstart, das Privileg die Vorschau der ersten Kollektion zu erleben! Normalerweise trage ich keine Röcke, aber mich reizen die Schnitte, Textile und Dekorationen von Ana Juarez – sie klappen einfach! Die Röcke sind exklusiv – jeweils nur 10 Stück pro Design, und sie sind ausserordentlich günstig bei €65. Ich trug eins aus der Werkstatt und genau in die Hände meiner Clique, die es von mir rissen, damit sie es anprobieren konnten! Also…
